The SGPT (Serum Glutamate Pyruvate Transaminase) test, also called ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase), is a liver enzyme test used to evaluate liver health. SGPT is primarily found in liver cells, and when the liver is damaged due to conditions like hepatitis, fatty liver, alcohol abuse, or drug toxicity, SGPT leaks into the bloodstream, leading to elevated levels.
High SGPT levels may indicate liver inflammation, infection, or injury, while mild elevations can be seen in muscle damage or certain medications. This test is commonly included in the Liver Function Test (LFT) panel to help diagnose and monitor liver diseases and assess response to treatment.
