The VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) test is a non-treponemal serological screening test used for the detection of syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. The test detects non-specific antibodies (reagin antibodies) that the body produces in response to lipoidal material released from damaged host cells and possibly from the treponemes themselves.
The VDRL test is most useful for:
Screening individuals for syphilis.
Monitoring treatment effectiveness and disease progression.
Detecting congenital syphilis in newborns.
It is typically performed on serum or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and gives quantitative results that help determine disease stage and treatment response. A reactive result should be followed by a confirmatory treponemal test like FTA-ABS or TPHA for accurate diagnosis.
