The Direct Coombs Test, also known as the Direct Antiglobulin Test (DAT), is a blood test that checks for antibodies or complement proteins attached to the surface of red blood cells. These antibodies can cause red blood cells to be destroyed—a condition known as hemolysis.
This test is mainly used to diagnose autoimmune hemolytic anemia, where the body’s immune system attacks its own red blood cells. It is also commonly performed in newborns with jaundice to detect hemolytic disease of the newborn, and in patients who may have had a reaction to a blood transfusion.
