The SGOT (Serum Glutamic-Oxaloacetic Transaminase), also known as AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase), test is a blood test used to evaluate liver function and detect liver damage. AST is an enzyme found mainly in the liver, heart, muscles, and kidneys. When these organs are damaged, AST is released into the bloodstream.
Elevated SGOT levels may indicate liver conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or fatty liver disease, as well as heart problems or muscle injury. The test is often performed alongside the SGPT (ALT) test for a more accurate assessment of liver health.
This test is commonly used for routine health check-ups, to monitor liver disease progression, or to evaluate the effects of medications or toxins on the liver. Interpretation of results should be done by a healthcare provider in the context of symptoms and other laboratory findings.
