The Widal Slide Test is a rapid serological test used to detect the presence of specific antibodies (O and H agglutinins) in a patient’s serum against Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi, the bacteria responsible for typhoid and paratyphoid fever.
In this test, a patient’s serum is mixed with known antigen suspensions of Salmonella on a slide. If antibodies are present, visible clumping (agglutination) occurs, indicating a positive result. This test is commonly used in regions where typhoid fever is endemic and offers a quick and cost-effective method for preliminary diagnosis.
However, the Widal test should be interpreted carefully, as previous infections or vaccinations may affect the results. It is often used in conjunction with clinical symptoms and other diagnostic tests for confirmation.
