The Iron Deficiency Profile is a comprehensive blood panel that evaluates multiple parameters to assess iron availability, transport, and storage. It helps in diagnosing iron deficiency anemia, chronic diseases, and iron overload conditions.
It includes:
Serum Iron:
Measures the circulating iron in the bloodstream. Low levels typically indicate iron deficiency.
Ferritin:
Reflects iron stores in the body. Low ferritin is the earliest indicator of iron deficiency, even before anemia develops. High ferritin may indicate inflammation or iron overload.
TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity):
Indicates the total capacity of blood to bind iron with transferrin. It increases when iron stores are low.
UIBC (Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity):
Measures the reserve capacity of transferrin to bind more iron. High UIBC suggests iron deficiency, as more binding sites are free.
Transferrin Saturation (%):
Calculated using serum iron and TIBC. It represents the percentage of transferrin that is saturated with iron. Low transferrin saturation confirms iron deficiency.
