The Iron Profile is a diagnostic panel that provides a comprehensive evaluation of iron metabolism and storage in the body. It includes:
Serum Iron:
Measures the amount of circulating iron in the blood. Low levels may indicate iron deficiency anemia, while high levels may be seen in iron overload conditions.
TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity):
Reflects the blood’s capacity to bind iron with transferrin. Increased TIBC is commonly seen in iron deficiency, and decreased levels may be seen in chronic diseases or iron overload.
Transferrin Saturation:
Calculated as a percentage of serum iron to TIBC. It indicates how much iron is bound to transferrin. Low transferrin saturation is a hallmark of iron deficiency, whereas high levels suggest iron overload disorders like hemochromatosis.
The Iron Profile helps differentiate between various types of anemia and is essential in diagnosing nutritional deficiencies or systemic iron dysregulation.
