The LBC PAP smear (Liquid-Based Cytology) is an advanced cervical cancer screening technique that improves upon the conventional PAP smear by using liquid-based technology. In this method, cervical cells are collected using a brush and immediately rinsed into a vial containing a preservative liquid. This sample is then processed in the laboratory to create a thin, even layer of cells on a microscope slide.
The LBC technique reduces the presence of obscuring elements like blood, mucus, or inflammation, leading to better visualization of cells and higher diagnostic accuracy. It is used primarily for detecting cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), human papillomavirus (HPV)-related changes, and early stages of cervical cancer. LBC PAP is also compatible with reflex HPV testing from the same sample, allowing for integrated cervical cancer screening.
This test is recommended for routine cervical screening in women, especially between the ages of 21 and 65, and is an important tool for early detection and prevention of cervical cancer.
