Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) is a simple, safe, and rapid diagnostic procedure used to investigate lumps, nodules, or swellings in various parts of the body—such as the thyroid, breast, lymph nodes, salivary glands, or soft tissues.
A fine, hollow needle is inserted into the suspicious area to extract a small sample of cells. The collected sample is then spread on slides, stained, and examined under a microscope to evaluate:
Cell morphology
Signs of infection
Benign or malignant changes
Inflammatory or cystic conditions
Benefits of FNAC:
Minimally invasive
Painless or mild discomfort
No need for anesthesia
Quick and cost-effective
Useful in early cancer detection and diagnosis
FNAC helps guide further management, including decisions about surgery, biopsy, or medical treatment, and is often the first-line investigation for accessible lumps.
