D-Dimer is a small protein fragment that is produced when a blood clot dissolves in the body. The D-Dimer test is a valuable diagnostic tool to detect active clot formation and breakdown in the bloodstream.
Under normal circumstances, D-Dimer is undetectable or present at very low levels. When the body forms and breaks down blood clots excessively, D-Dimer levels increase.
The D-Dimer test is primarily used to help rule out thrombotic conditions such as:
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) – blood clots in deep veins, usually in the legs,
Pulmonary Embolism (PE) – a clot in the lungs,
Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) – a serious condition causing widespread clotting and bleeding,
Stroke or other clotting disorders,
Monitoring coagulation status in COVID-19 or post-surgery patients.
