Lipoprotein-Associated Phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is an enzyme primarily bound to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles in the blood. It plays a key role in the inflammatory process within blood vessel walls, contributing to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques.
The Lp-PLA2 test measures the concentration or activity of this enzyme to help evaluate the risk of cardiovascular events, especially in individuals with:
Intermediate or high risk of heart disease,
Metabolic syndrome,
Family history of early cardiovascular disease, or
Normal cholesterol levels but other risk factors.
Elevated levels of Lp-PLA2 are associated with:
Plaque inflammation and instability,
Higher risk of coronary heart disease (CHD),
Increased risk of ischemic stroke and heart attack.
