Ceruloplasmin is a copper-containing protein produced in the liver that plays a crucial role in transporting copper in the bloodstream and in oxidative reactions. The Ceruloplasmin test is primarily used to help diagnose and monitor Wilson’s disease, a rare inherited disorder where copper accumulates in the liver, brain, and other tissues due to impaired excretion.
In Wilson's disease, ceruloplasmin levels are typically low, and this may be accompanied by high levels of free (unbound) copper in the blood and copper buildup in tissues.
