The Helicobacter pylori IgA test measures Immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies produced by the immune system in response to infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). This bacterium is commonly associated with chronic gastritis, gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and may contribute to the development of gastric cancer or MALT lymphoma.
Unlike IgG, which indicates past or present infection, IgA antibodies may reflect:
Recent or active infection, and
Mucosal immune response, especially in early or localized disease.
To support the diagnosis of active H. pylori infection,
To evaluate patients with gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., abdominal pain, bloating, nausea),
Useful in cases where non-invasive tests (like stool antigen or urea breath test) are inconclusive.
