The Anti-HBc IgM test identifies IgM class antibodies to the core antigen of the Hepatitis B virus (HBcAg). These antibodies are typically produced during the early phase of HBV infection and indicate recent or acute infection.
A positive Anti-HBc IgM result suggests:
Acute Hepatitis B infection (usually within 6 months of exposure),
Or, in some cases, a flare-up of chronic Hepatitis B.
This test is especially useful in the “window period”, when:
HBsAg is no longer detectable,
And Anti-HBs has not yet appeared.
