The Anti-HBs (Hepatitis B Surface Antibody) test is used to evaluate a person's immunity to the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). This antibody is produced by the immune system in response to the Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The presence of Anti-HBs in the blood indicates recovery from a previous HBV infection or successful immunization with the Hepatitis B vaccine.
A positive result suggests that the individual is immune to Hepatitis B, either due to:
Previous natural infection that has resolved, or
Vaccination that has successfully stimulated the immune response.
A negative result may indicate:
No prior exposure or vaccination,
Insufficient immune response to the vaccine,
Or, in rare cases, immunosuppression.
