The HBc-IgM test detects Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies against the core antigen (HBcAg) of the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV). These antibodies appear shortly after infection and are a key marker of a recent or acute Hepatitis B infection.
A positive HBc-IgM result indicates:
An acute or recent HBV infection (usually within the last 6 months)
The window period of HBV infection—when HBsAg has disappeared but anti-HBs is not yet detectable
Reactivation of HBV in chronic carriers (rarely)
This test is useful in:
Diagnosing early Hepatitis B infection, especially when HBsAg is inconclusive
Differentiating acute from chronic Hepatitis B
Evaluating unexplained liver enzyme elevations
Prenatal screening in high-risk populations
When combined with other Hepatitis B markers like HBsAg, HBeAg, and HBV DNA, the HBc-IgM test helps provide a complete picture of the infection status.
