The Anti-HAV Total test is a blood test that detects both IgM and IgG antibodies against the Hepatitis A Virus (HAV). This test is used to determine whether a person has a current or previous HAV infection, or if they have developed immunity from a past infection or vaccination.
Interpretation:
A positive Anti-HAV Total with negative IgM indicates past infection or immunity (either from recovery or vaccination).
A positive Anti-HAV Total with positive IgM suggests a recent or active infection.
A negative result means the individual is susceptible to infection and has no immunity.
This test is useful for:
Screening before or after Hepatitis A vaccination
Epidemiological studies or outbreak investigations
Travelers to HAV-endemic regions
Evaluating liver inflammation or abnormal liver function tests
HAV is transmitted via the fecal-oral route, and while the infection is usually acute and self-limiting, knowing one’s immune status helps guide vaccination and prevention strategies.
