The HBsAg ELISA test is an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay used to detect the presence of Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in the blood. HBsAg is the earliest indicator of acute or chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.
A positive HBsAg result means:
The person is currently infected with HBV
They may be in the acute or chronic phase of infection
The individual is infectious and can transmit the virus to others
This test is:
Routinely used in HBV screening programs
Essential in blood donor screening
Recommended during pregnancy to prevent mother-to-child transmission
Used to monitor recovery or persistence of infection in HBV patients
If HBsAg remains positive for more than 6 months, it indicates chronic Hepatitis B infection.
This test is usually ordered alongside:
Anti-HBs (Hepatitis B surface antibody)
HBeAg and Anti-HBe
HBV DNA levels for full assessment
