The HBeAg ELISA test is an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) used to detect the presence of Hepatitis B e Antigen (HBeAg) in the blood. HBeAg is a secreted viral protein associated with the active replication of the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and is considered a marker of high viral infectivity.
A positive HBeAg result suggests:
Active HBV replication
The individual is highly infectious
A possible increased risk of liver damage, such as chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis
This test is commonly used:
To monitor disease activity in chronic HBV infection
In Hepatitis B screening panels along with HBsAg, Anti-HBs, and Anti-HBe
During pregnancy to assess the risk of mother-to-child transmission
To guide antiviral treatment decisions and assess treatment response
A negative HBeAg with positive anti-HBe may indicate reduced infectivity or a transition to the inactive carrier state.
