The HSV IgG test is a serological blood test that detects IgG antibodies specific to Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), typically type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). A positive IgG result indicates past infection and the presence of long-term immunity or viral latency.
HSV-1 is commonly associated with oral herpes (cold sores), while
HSV-2 is more often linked to genital herpes, although both can infect either area.
This test is helpful in:
Determining prior exposure to HSV in asymptomatic individuals
Screening in prenatal care to assess risk to the fetus
Differentiating between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections
It is important to note that the test does not detect recent infections. For suspected recent or active infection, an HSV IgM test or viral culture/PCR is recommended.
