The CMV IgM test is a blood test that detects Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies specific to Cytomegalovirus (CMV). The presence of CMV IgM antibodies typically indicates a recent or current CMV infection. This test is crucial for diagnosing primary CMV infections, especially in pregnant women, newborns, and immunocompromised individuals.
A positive CMV IgM result suggests an active infection, but false positives can occur due to cross-reactivity or reactivation of latent CMV. Therefore, CMV IgM results are often interpreted alongside CMV IgG levels, clinical history, and sometimes CMV PCR (DNA testing) for accurate diagnosis.
This test is commonly ordered:
During pregnancy to assess the risk of congenital CMV infection
In organ transplant recipients
For patients with unexplained fever or mononucleosis-like symptoms
Accurate detection and timing of CMV infection are critical for effective treatment and management.
