The Rubella IgM Test measures the presence of IgM-class antibodies produced by the immune system in response to recent infection with the rubella virus (German measles). IgM antibodies typically appear within a few days to weeks after infection and usually decline after a few months.
This test is especially critical for pregnant women, as rubella infection during the first trimester can lead to congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), which may cause miscarriage, stillbirth, or serious birth defects such as deafness, heart defects, and developmental delays.
It is commonly ordered along with Rubella IgG to differentiate between past and current infection. In cases of positive IgM, further testing (e.g., IgG avidity test) may be performed to confirm the timing and stage of infection.
