The Rubella IgG Test measures the presence of IgG-class antibodies against the rubella virus (German measles). These antibodies develop either after natural infection or vaccination and typically remain in the blood for life, providing long-term immunity.
This test is most important for:
Pregnant women, to confirm immunity and prevent congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), which can cause birth defects, miscarriage, or stillbirth if rubella infection occurs during early pregnancy.
People undergoing pre-marital or pre-pregnancy screening
Healthcare workers or individuals needing proof of rubella immunity
A positive IgG result indicates prior exposure or vaccination and usually means the person is protected. A negative result suggests susceptibility and may require vaccination (except during pregnancy).
