COMPLEMENT C3 Detail

The Complement C3 Test evaluates the amount of complement component 3 (C3) in the blood. C3 is a crucial protein of the complement system, a part of the immune response that helps the body fight infections and clear damaged cells.

C3 plays a central role in activating the complement cascade, which enhances the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to remove pathogens. Abnormal C3 levels can indicate immune system disorders:

• Low C3 levels may be seen in:

  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

  • Glomerulonephritis

  • Severe bacterial infections

  • Hereditary complement deficiencies

• High C3 levels may be associated with:

  • Inflammation

  • Acute infections

  • Certain cancers

The test is often ordered with Complement C4 and used in the monitoring of autoimmune diseases, especially lupus nephritis.
