The Anti-Streptolysin O (ASO) Test measures the presence of antibodies against streptolysin O, a toxin produced by Group A Streptococcus (GAS) bacteria. When a person is infected with GAS, the immune system produces ASO antibodies to fight the infection. Elevated ASO levels indicate a recent streptococcal infection, even if symptoms are no longer present.
This test is particularly useful in diagnosing post-infectious complications such as:
Rheumatic fever
Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis
Scarlet fever
It is not used to diagnose an ongoing strep throat infection, but rather to confirm that a person recently had one. The test is often ordered when symptoms such as joint pain, fever, or heart issues appear weeks after a sore throat.
