HLAB27 PCR Detail

The HLA-B27 PCR (Human Leukocyte Antigen B27 Polymerase Chain Reaction) test is a molecular diagnostic test that identifies the presence of the HLA-B27 gene using advanced PCR technology. The HLA-B27 gene is part of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system, which plays a vital role in the immune system’s ability to distinguish self from non-self.

The presence of HLA-B27 is strongly associated with several autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, particularly ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease-associated arthritis.

This test is especially useful when diagnosing patients with chronic back pain, joint stiffness, or inflammatory symptoms where autoimmune disease is suspected. Unlike serological tests, PCR offers high sensitivity and specificity, even with minimal DNA samples, making it a reliable method for genetic typing.

Note: Testing positive for HLA-B27 does not confirm a disease diagnosis on its own, as some healthy individuals may carry the gene without any symptoms.
