CA 19-9 (Cancer Antigen 19-9) is a tumor marker — a protein that may be found in higher amounts in the blood of people with certain cancers, especially pancreatic cancer. The test is mainly used for monitoring cancer progression or response to treatment, rather than for initial cancer diagnosis or screening.
Clinical Applications:
🔹 Used to:
Monitor treatment response in pancreatic cancer
Detect recurrence after surgery or chemotherapy
Support diagnosis in suspected gastrointestinal cancers, including:
Bile duct cancer (Cholangiocarcinoma)
Colorectal cancer
Gallbladder cancer
Liver cancer
🔹 Not ideal for early detection:
CA 19-9 is not specific to cancer and can be elevated in non-cancerous conditions such as:
Gallstones
Pancreatitis
Liver cirrhosis
Bile duct obstruction
