The Folic Acid test (also known as Vitamin B9 test) measures the concentration of folic acid in the blood. Folic acid is a water-soluble B-vitamin vital for DNA synthesis, cell division, and the production of red blood cells. It is especially important during pregnancy for healthy fetal development and to prevent neural tube defects.
A deficiency in folic acid may lead to megaloblastic anemia, fatigue, weakness, irritability, and poor concentration. Low levels can also cause complications in pregnancy and affect brain and heart health.
This test is often recommended for individuals with anemia, nutritional deficiencies, chronic alcoholism, malabsorption conditions (like celiac or Crohn’s disease), or those on medications that interfere with folate absorption.
Clinical Indications:
Evaluation of unexplained anemia or fatigue
Nutritional assessment
Pregnant women or those planning pregnancy
Monitoring in chronic alcohol users
Gastrointestinal disorders affecting nutrient absorption
Long-term medication use (e.g., methotrexate, phenytoin)
