The Stool Occult Blood test (also called FOBT – Fecal Occult Blood Test) is used to detect hidden (not visible) blood in the stool. Even small amounts of blood, which may not be seen with the naked eye, can be identified through this test. The presence of occult blood may indicate bleeding in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
This test is commonly used as a screening tool for colorectal cancer, polyps, ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and other digestive tract issues. It is especially recommended for people over age 45–50 as part of routine cancer screening. A positive test result usually warrants further evaluation, such as a colonoscopy.
