The Androstenedione test measures the level of androstenedione, a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands, ovaries (in females), and testes (in males). It is a precursor to both testosterone and estrogens and plays a role in the development of secondary sexual characteristics and reproductive function.
This test is used to evaluate excess androgen production, especially in cases of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), adrenal tumors, or hirsutism (excessive hair growth) in females. Elevated androstenedione levels can lead to symptoms such as acne, irregular periods, infertility, and virilization.
In children, it may be used to assess early or delayed puberty and in newborns with ambiguous genitalia.
