The Anti-TPO (Anti-Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody) test measures the presence of antibodies against thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme essential for the production of thyroid hormones. When the immune system mistakenly attacks this enzyme, it can lead to autoimmune thyroid disorders.
This test is most commonly used to help diagnose conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (hypothyroidism) and Graves’ disease (hyperthyroidism). Elevated levels of Anti-TPO antibodies indicate that the immune system is attacking the thyroid gland, which may cause inflammation, disrupted hormone production, and long-term thyroid damage.
It is especially useful in evaluating patients with symptoms of thyroid dysfunction, a goiter, or abnormal TSH/T3/T4 levels. It may also be used to assess risk during pregnancy, as autoimmune thyroid disease can affect both mother and baby.
