The Thyroglobulin test measures the level of thyroglobulin, a protein produced by the thyroid gland. It plays a key role in the production of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). Under normal conditions, thyroglobulin is present in very small amounts in the blood.
This test is most commonly used as a tumor marker in individuals who have had thyroid cancer, especially papillary or follicular thyroid carcinoma. After thyroid removal (thyroidectomy) and/or radioactive iodine treatment, thyroglobulin levels should be very low or undetectable. Rising levels may suggest cancer recurrence.
It can also help evaluate the function of the thyroid gland in certain other thyroid disorders, though it is not typically used for initial diagnosis.
