The Progesterone test measures the level of progesterone, a key reproductive hormone primarily produced by the ovaries in women and in small amounts by the adrenal glands in both sexes. During pregnancy, the placenta also produces progesterone.
In women, progesterone plays a crucial role in preparing the uterus for pregnancy after ovulation, supporting implantation, and maintaining early pregnancy. The test is commonly used to determine if and when ovulation has occurred, to assess fertility issues, monitor pregnancy health, and evaluate menstrual irregularities.
In men, although present in smaller amounts, progesterone contributes to sperm development and hormone balance.
