The DHEAS (Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate) test measures the level of DHEAS, a hormone produced primarily by the adrenal glands. DHEAS is a precursor hormone, which the body can convert into male (androgens) and female (estrogens) sex hormones.
This test is commonly used to evaluate adrenal gland disorders, early or delayed puberty, excessive hair growth, acne, and irregular menstrual cycles, especially in women. In men, DHEAS helps assess hormonal balance and possible adrenal tumors. Abnormal DHEAS levels may indicate PCOS, adrenal hyperplasia, adrenal tumors, or Cushing’s syndrome.
Since DHEAS levels are not affected by daily fluctuations (unlike other hormones), a single blood sample provides reliable information.
