The Fasting Insulin test measures the level of insulin in your blood after an overnight fast. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels by allowing sugar to enter cells for energy use or storage.
This test is primarily used to evaluate insulin resistance, a condition in which the body’s cells do not respond properly to insulin, often seen in prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Elevated fasting insulin levels may indicate that the pancreas is working harder to keep blood sugar normal, which can be an early warning sign of developing diabetes.
It is also used in the diagnosis and management of conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hypoglycemia.
