The Prolactin test measures the level of prolactin hormone in the blood. Prolactin is produced by the pituitary gland, and its main function is to promote milk production (lactation) in women after childbirth. However, prolactin is present in both men and women, and abnormal levels can indicate various health conditions.
Elevated prolactin levels (hyperprolactinemia) can be caused by pituitary tumors (prolactinomas), thyroid disorders, kidney disease, or certain medications. In women, high levels may cause irregular periods, infertility, or milk production without pregnancy. In men, it can lead to low libido, erectile dysfunction, or infertility.
Clinical Indications:
Evaluation of infertility in women and men
Investigation of irregular menstrual cycles or absence of periods
Assessment of abnormal milk secretion (galactorrhea)
Diagnosis of pituitary gland disorders
Evaluation of low testosterone in men
Monitoring pituitary tumors (prolactinomas)
