The Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) test measures the activity level of the ADA enzyme in body fluids like pleural fluid, peritoneal fluid, or cerebrospinal fluid. ADA is an enzyme involved in the metabolism of purines and is important for the functioning of lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell).
Increased levels of ADA are most commonly associated with tuberculosis (TB), particularly extra-pulmonary TB, such as tubercular pleural effusion or TB meningitis. High ADA activity in pleural or other fluids can strongly suggest TB infection, especially when other signs or symptoms are present.
