Lipoprotein(a), also known as Lp(a), is a type of lipoprotein particle made up of LDL (bad cholesterol) and a specific protein called apolipoprotein(a). This test measures the concentration of Lp(a) in the blood, which is largely determined by genetics and is not significantly affected by diet, exercise, or lifestyle.
High levels of Lp(a) are linked to an increased risk of atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and strokes, even when other cholesterol levels (like LDL or HDL) are normal. It can also contribute to valvular heart disease, especially aortic valve stenosis.
The Lp(a) test is particularly useful for individuals with:
A family history of early heart disease or stroke
Normal lipid profiles but unexplained cardiovascular events
Premature atherosclerosis or recurrent heart disease despite treatment
