The Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) test measures the concentration of Apo B, the main protein found in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and other atherogenic lipoproteins. Apo B is responsible for carrying cholesterol through the bloodstream to various tissues.
Elevated levels of Apo B indicate an increased number of potentially harmful cholesterol particles, which can build up in the arteries and lead to atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes. This test is considered a better predictor of cardiovascular risk than LDL cholesterol alone, especially in people with diabetes, metabolic syndrome, or normal LDL but high triglycerides.
