The Homocysteine test measures the amount of homocysteine in your blood. Homocysteine is an amino acid that your body uses to make proteins. Normally, it is broken down by vitamins B6, B12, and folate. When these vitamins are deficient or metabolism is impaired, homocysteine levels can rise.
High levels of homocysteine (hyperhomocysteinemia) may indicate a higher risk of cardiovascular conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and blood vessel disorders. Elevated levels can also be associated with vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, and may be used in evaluating neurological symptoms or homocystinuria, a rare inherited disorder.
