The Phosphorus (or Phosphate) test determines the amount of phosphorus in the blood. Phosphorus is a vital mineral that works closely with calcium to build and maintain healthy bones and teeth. It also plays an important role in energy production, nerve function, and muscle contraction.
Abnormal phosphorus levels may be caused by:
Kidney disease (most common cause of high phosphate)
Parathyroid gland disorders
Vitamin D imbalance
Bone diseases
Malnutrition or malabsorption disorders
Low phosphorus levels (hypophosphatemia) can result from malnutrition, alcoholism, or severe burns, while high levels (hyperphosphatemia) are often seen in chronic kidney disease.
