The Uric Acid test measures the amount of uric acid in the blood — a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines, substances found in certain foods and body cells. Normally, uric acid is filtered by the kidneys and excreted in urine.
Elevated uric acid levels (hyperuricemia) may indicate gout, a form of arthritis caused by uric acid crystal buildup in joints, or kidney dysfunction, where the kidneys are unable to eliminate uric acid properly. High levels can also lead to uric acid kidney stones. Lower-than-normal levels may occur in certain liver or kidney diseases, or with some medications.
This test is commonly used to diagnose gout, monitor uric acid-lowering treatments, or evaluate kidney health in patients with chronic conditions.
