The Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) test measures the amount of LDH enzyme in the blood. LDH is found in nearly all the body's cells, including those in the heart, liver, kidneys, muscles, brain, lungs, and blood cells. It plays a role in energy production.
When any of these tissues are damaged, LDH is released into the bloodstream, making it a non-specific marker of tissue injury. Elevated LDH levels can indicate liver disease, heart attack, muscle injury, hemolytic anemia, infections, or certain cancers.
This test is often used to help diagnose and monitor diseases, determine the severity of tissue damage, or assess the effectiveness of treatment in conditions like cancer or anemia.
