The Amylase test measures the amount of amylase, an enzyme produced primarily by the pancreas and salivary glands. Amylase helps the body break down carbohydrates into simple sugars.
This test is commonly used to diagnose and monitor acute pancreatitis, where amylase levels typically rise sharply. Elevated levels may also occur in chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic duct obstruction, gallstones, or salivary gland infections (like mumps). Low levels can sometimes be seen in pancreatic damage or kidney disease.
Amylase is often tested along with lipase, another pancreatic enzyme, for more accurate diagnosis of pancreatic disorders.
