The Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT or Gamma GT) test measures the level of the GGT enzyme in the blood. GGT is primarily found in the liver, and its levels can rise significantly when there is liver damage, bile duct obstruction, or excessive alcohol consumption.
Elevated GGT levels are often an early indicator of liver disease, especially those caused by alcohol abuse, fatty liver, hepatitis, or drug toxicity. It is also useful in detecting biliary obstruction (blockage of bile flow) and monitoring alcohol abstinence in individuals with a history of alcohol use.
This test is commonly performed alongside ALP, SGPT (ALT), and SGOT (AST) to provide a clearer picture of liver and bile duct health.
