The Albumin test determines the concentration of albumin, a major protein produced by the liver. Albumin plays a crucial role in maintaining oncotic pressure (fluid balance in the blood vessels), and in transporting hormones, vitamins, and drugs throughout the body.
Low albumin levels may indicate liver disease, kidney disorders (such as protein loss in urine), malnutrition, or chronic inflammation. High levels are less common but can be seen in dehydration.
This test is often part of a Liver Function Test (LFT) or Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) and helps assess liver performance, detect chronic illnesses, and monitor overall health and nutritional status.
