The SGOT (Serum Glutamic-Oxaloacetic Transaminase) test, also known as AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase), is used to assess liver and heart function. SGOT is an enzyme found in the liver, heart, muscles, kidneys, and brain. When any of these tissues are damaged, SGOT is released into the bloodstream.
Elevated SGOT levels may indicate liver disease, heart attack, muscle injury, or other conditions affecting these organs. It is often used alongside SGPT (ALT) and other tests in the Liver Function Test (LFT) panel to help diagnose and monitor liver conditions, differentiate between causes of jaundice, or assess the extent of tissue damage.
